The committee of the Brough Bay Association exclude local residents from being full members of the association for their own ends. Even people who have lived in the village all of their lives have been told that they cannot join. They also pretend that they own all of the land at the Bay, but this is untrue. The deeds clearly show a section as belonging to the company Brough Bay Ltd. The chairman of the association has caused untold trouble in the village and has been visited by the police several times.

Celebrations at Brough Harbour

On 14th June 2011, there were celebrations for three new projects in Brough. Sadly very few of the villagers were invited. The pier looks really nice now but sadly the area is spoiled by the Brough Bay Association's boats being dumped at the bay spoiling the overall effect.

Subsequent reports in the John o Groats Journal expressed disgust at the BBA and saying that they should look after the area better.

Fence at Brough Bay

Of course, the existence of the fence does not mean you cannot use the land behind the fence, but please do not damage the fence - it is monitored by CCTV to protect it from vandalism. Feel free to use the bay as you normally would and once the bully boys have withdrawn their claim, the bay will be restored to its former glory without the fence. The fence has been wrecked and stolen by vandals and the boats put back in situ.

Land dispute

We apologise to users of Brough Bay for the inconvenience of having a fence across part of the car park. This is due to a land dispute with the Brough Bay Association who are claiming the land of Brough Bay Ltd. despite there being title deeds in the latters' name, and the usage of the land far earlier than that of the association. The fence will be removed when the BBA withdraw any claim on the land of the Company and fulfil certain other conditions. The project to renovate the pier can then continue.

We are sincerely sorry, but have had no choice but to take this drastic action. You can contact us via this blog should you have any queries. The fence was erected on
13th February 2011.

Spot the deliberate mistake!

A member of the "ruling body" of Brough Bay says that the clean up day was postponed from 24th to 25th April 2010 due to rain on 24th. You can see the weather and the team working on the pier on 24th. The deliberate mistake is that the posting was on 22nd.....maybe the member in question is clairvoyant....

Rubbish at Brough Bay

It is a shame that some mindless hooligan has dumped two rotting hulks at Brough Bay, stolen the grill pan and grill from the barbecue and demolished the structure. You would think that the north of Scotland would be safe from vandalism, but apparently not!

We have copies of old photos of Brough Bay donated by a generous local supporter. We hope to be able to catalogue these in a format which can be viewed by visitors, giving an explanation of what the Bay was used for.

Brough Bay clean up day - 25th April

Day two of the clean up day, when the area round the seats were cleaned up and gravel put on the path and under the seats. A lot of dead grass and weeds were pulled out leaving a pleasant place for people to sit and enjoy the scenery and the resident seal colony in Brough Bay.

The Brough Bay clean up was done over a two day period, the first to repair the slipway, build a barbecue and put a rubbish bin in place. The beach was also picked clean of much of the rubbish.

The Dunnet Head Educational Trust also organised a skip for the villagers of Brough to get rid of their rubbish over the weekend. Thanks to the Highland Council for their assistance.

Adopt a beach

The owners of part of Brough Bay in the north of Scotland have adopted their beach under the Adopt a beach scheme run by the Marine Conservation Society. A clean up will take place on 24th April.

Camping at Brough Bay

Brough Bay is a great place to camp - either wild camping in the Bay or in the field above which has bathroom facilities. There are now barbecue facilities and a rubbish bin available - but we would prefer it if you took your rubbish home! You can rent barbecue equipment from the camp shop at Windhaven - the property above. Open 10-11am and 5-7pm daily.

Brough Bay

Brough Bay is situated at the base of Dunnet Head and is the home of a resident seal colony. The Bay was used for landing materials when the Dunnet Head lighthouse was being constructed and you can still see remains of some of the winch equipment which was used to pull boats out of the water.

The Bay is a great site for diving, kayaking, fishing or just relaxing in a quiet spot with a barbecue or picnic. There are some great walks in the area - route cards are available from our web site. There is a small pier and a boat park, the latter the property of the trading arm of the Dunnet Head Educational Trust. We ask that you leave the site tidy, do not block the slipway and follow the country code.

The owners of part of the Bay have adopted it under the Marine Conservation Society. You can contact us for further information.
